ABOUT THIS BAND:
Meet Behold The Arctopus, an Instrumental Technical / Progressive chocolate box mesh of ideas that will either leave you on your bed resting comfortably, or on the floor in convulsions.
This is their grand, long awaited second album, that's being released today, October 23rd, by Black Market Activities.
This marks a new era for the band, what with the line-up changes and new injection of musical ideas, so the elipsis [...] is being removed from the band name.
Fun stuff: 12 string Waar guitarist Colin Marston (Dysrhythmia) dived into some new musical ocean depths, founding avant-black metal band Krallice and joined up as a member of long time death metal legends, Gorguts.
Original drummer Charlie Zeleney departed from the band, to be replaced by Weasel Walter, who is noted for his musical collaborations with free jazz, death metal, hardcore punk, and noise.
Original guitarist, Mike Lerner, brings back an abundance with his guitar playing ability as well.
This album was written down completely on paper, and then learned (as all of Arctopus' material has been).
Said Marston, "Since our music is written down and then learned, like classical music, we're never actually building songs based on our playing ability. It's very different from jamming out a bunch of riffs."
He also went on to say, "I would love it if, when people hear Horrorscension, they think 'Whoa, what the hell is going on?' rather than 'Wow, they can play their instruments well'. I want the focus to be on the content, not the performance."
Horrorscension was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Marston himself at his Thousand Caves studio in Queens, New York.
(He got some extra experience in helping out as a recording engineer for albums from Kayo Dot, Jarboe, Altar of Plagues, and Orthrelm.)
Apart from being the, if not, one of the coolest three piece in metal (the other is Blotted Science), they've made an album that will almost assuredly make it into my top 10 for 2012. I hope it will for many others.

Behold… The Arctopus сформировали Колин Марстон и Майк Лирнер , которые вместе музицировали на гитаре более полутора лет прежде чем они нашли барабанщика. Основное влияние оказали : Cynic, Ulver, Death, Neurosis, Darkthrone, Meshuggah, Voivod и Gorguts
После релиза двух EP и сплита, группа выпускает свой первый полноформатник, названный Skullgrid, в октябре 2007го. Группа отправляется в тур с Genghis Tron и The Dillinger Escape Plan в поддержку альбома , но тур был урезан вследствии травмы одного из участников TDEP. Чтобы помочь парням окупить их финансовые потери от этого тура, Between The Buried And Me взяли группу в свой теукщий тур, где они были хэдлайнерами, с саппортом в лице August Burns Red.
30го декабря 2008 , драммер Чарли написал объявление на своей странице MySpace о том что после пяти лет работы в группе он покидает ее, чтобы сконцентрироваться на своей карьере как сессионного музыканта.

The official band name was Behold... the Arctopus until 2012, when the ellipsis was removed.
Behold the Arctopus has been described as “soulless technical death metal,” and as their second album Horrorscension opens with Disintegore, this proves to be true. It’s a song that feels like an intro or an overture, as if at any second it will break into a recognizable song structure, into a flowing work of progressive genius. But it doesn’t… And the whole album is like this.
Horrorscension is ever more flat and pointless than Behold the Arctopus’s first album, Skullgrid. Any actual appeal possessed by their debut has degenerated into a complete disregard for good songwriting. There is nothing on here besides bland, mindless tech death wankery, and almost never is there a change in pace, the usage of dynamics, nothing on here that makes the music actually enjoyable. It gets really annoying to listen to after a while, the riffs and solos utterly forgettable and a lack of vocals (not that I have a problem with instrumental work) adding to the mechanical, robotic emotionlessness of Horrorscension.
Behold the Arctopus has even crafted a ten minute song, Annihilvore, to finish off the album. Normally I would refer to this as an “epic closer,” but there is nothing epic about this. They could have cut it in half to no loss. Or gotten rid of it completely. Or, better yet, never written the album to begin with. Like the rest of Horrorscension, it goes absolutely nowhere, filled with pointless wankery and without structure. There is no evolution in any of these songs. Nothing interesting happens.
There are rare deviations from this lack of direction – Horrorsentience slows down at the end; Deluge of Sores has a touch of actual feeling (I use the word lightly), perhaps due to its slightly upbeat riffing, and is the only song that doesn’t make me want to peel my fingernails off one by one (these two minor variations are not exactly saving graces). Another thing that doesn’t entirely suck is the musicianship. Songs like these have only one purpose: to show off the band members’ skills, and they do, each performance sounding tight although not impressive considering how lackluster the actual riffs and soloing are. But it’s not like these are a bunch of inexperienced kids who are trying to cover a highly technical song and end up over their heads.
Progressive is defined as “moving forward.” Behold the Arctopus’s music does not go anywhere. They are not progressive, only meaninglessly technical, and the album’s sole purpose is to showcase this. People who think that Dream Theater have abandoned all notions of good songwriting to show off their technicality have clearly never heard Behold the Arctopus, because that is exactly what this band does. I can only thank BtA for making Horrorscension a short ordeal.
