Outlands is the new full length album from Sunnata. Poland's Sunnata caused a bit of tremor to resonate around the stoner/doom community with the release of their 2016 album "Zorya", a stunning collection of psych drenched tunes infused with both doom and post-metal textures that had reviewers falling over themselves to heap praise upon. Some called it spiritual and transcendental, others called it mind expanding and brave, either way you looked at it Sunnata had with "Zorya" announced their arrival as a major player on the underground scene. This year the band return to once again expand our minds and re-spin our chakras with their latest offering "Outlands".
"Outlands" begins with "Intro" a series of deep disonant droning effects backed by chiming percussion that slowly segues into "Lucid Dream" an eastern tinted opus based around a deliciously liquid bass line over which eastern tinted guitar motifs are weaved backed up some superbly restrained but totally effective drumming. The song has a strong spiritual feel which is made to feel even more so by the use of clean, mellow cantilated style vocal melodies. more intoned than actually sang giving the song an almost mystical feel. This spiritualistic approach is prominent throughout "Outlands" eight tracks with many of the songs having an almost devout feel, albeit with a heavy doom/post-metal bias, the band blending elements of grunge, sludge, stoner, psych and even Indian raga into songs with titles like "Gordian Knot" and "Hollow Kingdom" , stirring these elements together in one big melting pot to create something that is as exciting as it is unique.
Outlands is a dark doomy trip from beginning to end and besides great song-writing there is simply so much more that makes this album as magnificent as it is. Flawlessly arranged and mixed songs, with a production that is warm and raw, yet easily distinguishable not only between the instruments, but just as much between the layers and layers of perfectly arranged sounds. The band is influenced by the likes Yob, Alice In Chains, Tool and ISIS, but characterizing them as clones of those would be ludicrous. While the influences might be apparent, the outcome is completely its own. The tribal and oriental influences make the already psychedelic post doom even more vibrant. The layers of raw yet fragile textures are breathtaking, and the Swans-inspired repetitive nature with all its overall simplicity serves extremely well with complexity of arrangements. It’s as if the two, not only, balance one-another out, but at the same time serve the greater atmospheric good of the album.
After a few spins of Outlands, digging into thier back-catalogue is unavoidable. The previous two albums offer almost just as much to dig into, but the new album does come across as more well-rounded, mature and vital. This is mostly due to dazzling handling of layers in songwriting, arranging and the final mix. Sunnata is a unique band and Outlands is a perfect validation of that statement. If you give it time it will swallow you whole into its dark yet gorgeous and hypnotic world. Sometimes brutal, sometimes beautiful, sometimes challenging, sometimes simple but at all times totally intruiguing and immersive "Outlands" is an album that delivers on all levels.
